Mental Health Awareness Month
June 5, 2025

As we wrap up Mental Health Awareness month, I’m happy to highlight something I recently saw. In one of our preschool classrooms hangs a poster that says, “What helps you calm down?” Below it are answers from children in the classroom. Some children said, “Taking deep breaths,” “A hug from my teacher,” “Having space or being alone for a bit,” and “Having a stuffy to cuddle.”
These heartwarming responses represent some of the social-emotional learning that takes place in our classrooms and learning environments. Teachers and home visitors help children name their emotions and learn what to do when emotions like anger, sadness, or frustration pop up. Creating a poster like the one I saw in a ClackCoKids classroom helps children and staff to remember what children need when emotions arise. Teachers can say, “I see that you’re feeling upset. It’s okay to feel that. Would you like to take some deep breaths with me?”
In addition to helping children learn and manage their emotions, our staff also support children to make friends and to have confidence in exploring their learning environment. Our Mental Health Specialists work with our staff to offer tips to support the entire classroom and individual children. I’m so grateful for our staff who work every day to promote the mental health of children in our program!
