Recently, one of our long-time staff members, Martha Pinto, completed a big step in her own professional development journey, and we couldn’t be more excited for her. After more than 20 years with ClackCoKids, Martha participated in an Early Childhood Education Certificate program through a Spanish-language cohort at Clackamas Community College. Thanks to a CCC scholarship and our strong partnership with the college, Martha was able to balance work, school, and family while fulfilling her dream of furthering her education. Take a look at what Martha has to say about her experience:

How long have you worked at ClackCoKids?

I have worked at ClackCoKids for over 20 years. It has been a place where I’ve grown not only professionally, but also personally.

What made you decide to go back to school?

I wanted to improve my knowledge and be a better teacher for the children and families I serve. I also wanted to show my children that it’s never too late to follow your dreams. My passion for education and my desire to keep learning were big motivations.

How long did it take you to complete your degree?

It took me about two years to complete my program, since I was balancing work, school, and family responsibilities.

What advice would you give to other staff and parents about going back to school as an adult?

Don’t be afraid to start. It’s normal to feel nervous, but you’re not alone. Ask for help when you need it, stay organized, and remember that every small step brings you closer to your goal. You’ll be proud of yourself in the end.

What is next for you on your educational and professional journey?

I want to continue learning and maybe pursue an associate degree in the future. For now, I plan to keep supporting children and families with everything I’ve learned and be a resource for others who are thinking of going back to school.

Anything else you want us to know, Martha?

I truly appreciate the support ClackCoKids has given me on this journey, and I’m happy to share my experience if it can inspire others. Participating in the Spanish ECE Cohort through the partnerships with CCC has been a life-changing opportunity for me.
