2024 Souper Bowl Supper Recap
By Darcee Kilsdonk, Executive Director |
Our first annual Souper Bowl Supper help last weekend to support our community food pantry was a success! Here’s why I’m so passionate about this event…
We know the research is clear that nutrition is essential to brain development in the first 1,000 days of life. As an early care and education-focused agency, ClackCoKids is heavily invested in providing excellent nutrition in our programming and in addressing food insecurity in our communities. ClackCoKids works to impact the issue in a variety of ways. According to the Oregon Hunger Task Force, 10% of children in Clackamas County are food insecure. In our programs, roughly 20% of enrolled families are living below federal poverty guidelines, and another 65% rely on public assistance for additional food support. The stakes are high. As indicated in the Journal of Pediatric Health, “the ramifications are large because failure to optimize brain development early in life appears to have long-term consequences with respect to education, job potential, and adult mental health. These long-term consequences are the ‘ultimate cost to society’ of early life adversity.”
In addition to serving USDA-approved, quality daily breakfast, lunch, and snacks to children in our centers, ClackCoKids also offers a cooking course called “Cooking Matters,” a curriculum designed to teach families how to create nutritious meals on a budget and provides families with groceries to prepare the meal they learned to create at home. Last year, this program offered over 485 bags of grocers to participating families.
ClackCoKids is keenly aware that food insecurity in our community extends beyond currently enrolled families. The food pantry program at our Barlow Center plays a vital role in helping Canby families get enough to eat. In 2023, through our partnership with the Oregon Food Bank, our food pantry provided the following:
- Over 640 food boxes to new and returning families
- Support for over 2,200 new or returning visitors served
- Food for 180 NEW families participating in the pantry
Due to a generous sponsorship by Proactive Cleaning Solutions, all proceeds from our 2024 Souper Bowl Supper directly support our food pantry. Furthermore, event attendees donated over 875 pantry and self-care items that will be distributed directly to families through our pantry program. Funds donated will be specifically used to supplement the pantry with meat, eggs and other protein sources as these are items that are not typically provided at the pantry and families have expressed the need for more protein to supplement their food supply.
We hold DEEP gratitude for the participants of our Souper Bowl event, including the vendors that donated soup and bread, tailgaters that made the event so much fun, Sandy High School Pioneers for their volunteerism, and all of the attendees who showed up for fun and food support.
We look forward to hosting another Souper Bowl Supper in 2025 and hope you join us in tackling hunger again next year.
